Innovative sheep breading controlling inbreeding

Are you looking to maximise the benefits of using the best maternal genetics? In that case, you are probably thinking of coming back for more rams in later years from Innovative Sheep Breeding.

If you are buying more than one tup at a time, we recommend that you buy closely related rams.

This will increase your options in the future, without compromising on quality. We colour code rams to make this easier.

When you contact us again, we can perform an inbreeding analysis of the current rams available and remove, from the selection, any that are too closely related. We will generate a list of animals from which you can make your selection.

We recommend that if you are a repeat buyer that you should contact us earlier in the season so that we can give you plenty of options.

In any progressive breeding system which is not based on breeding families, the analysis needs to be done by a computer. Family line breeding will make significantly reduced genetic progress, though it will control inbreeding. It does not require computers.

Here at Innovative Sheep Breeding, we plan our tupping or mating season, using computers to calculate inbreeding coefficients and then allocating the best mating combinations given those constraints. We then go out and sort the animals accordingly.

You can come back to Innovative Sheep Breeding with confidence if you want to use our superior genetics to get the maximum effect. We will help you control your inbreeding, and we will tell you if we cannot supply any rams because they are too closely related. It does help to have both the Performancelleyns and the ProlleyNZ available as this widens the genetic pool.

I am far from confident that this type of service is available from other breeders because it is both technical and time-consuming. There is at present no software available that will perform this task at the click of a mouse.
