At Innovative Sheep Breeding, we produce ewe lambs that are excess to our replacement requirements. So, we sell them as breeding sheep.

However, we consider our Performancelleyns and ProlleyNZ rams that we sell to be our principal sheep breeding products. In most cases, it is the best cost/genetic solution for our customers, giving them the greatest genetic "bang for their buck".

For this to be effective, you have to be retaining your replacement ewes in addition to producing fat lamb.

This system has to be, in our opinion, your best sheep breeding solution.

The only question then is whether to buy a Lleyn ram or a composite ram bred from the best New Zealand sheep.

Retaining breeding ewes makes for a more complex system, and this cannot fit in with everyone. So, buying in quality high-performance ewe lambs from a biosecure source could be your best option.

You may have decided to go down the path of retaining your breeding sheep but feel your sheep flock is too far removed from your goal to breed them up. In that case, contact us about our ewe lambs for sale.

You might be just starting in sheep farming and need to buy some quality ewe lambs to start your maternal/dual-purpose sheep flock.

You may have contracted a severe iceberg disease, such as Maedi-Visna, in your breeding sheep. A scenario which is not as uncommon as you might think, unfortunately. You may have to replace part or even your whole sheep flock and need an appropriate biosecure breeding ewe to begin sheep farming again but in a safe and long-term sustainable manner. We always sell our excess young sheep as ewe lambs, not shearling ewes. However, most of the ewe lambs for sale are of a tupping size.

Also, we occasionally sell older flock age ewes; the result of changing over a third of breeding sheep every year, in our search for ever-increasing genetic improvement. However, there may not be as many of these older ewes available as you might think, as we will cull an animal if we are not 100 per cent happy with it. Our ethos has always been, we would not sell anything we would not be satisfied with ourselves. It is the same ethos we apply to all our business dealings.

Be aware that if you buy ewe lambs or older ewes, it becomes challenging to supply unrelated rams. A ram purchased is half your fat lambs and half your replacement breeding ewes. In simple words, half your flock, which is why he will always be superior genetic value.
